Wisconsin Madison vs Penn State University Park vs Purdue

Hey everyone! I desperately need some advice on which college I should pick. My top 5 acceptance are: UW Madison, Penn State University Park, Purdue, UC Davis and UC Irvine. I want to pursue electrical engineering/electrical and computer engineering. I'm an international student from India and I don't much care about the climate, so it isn't a factor I think I need to consider. I care about university ranks + subject ranks + how good the colleges really are + the student community. Please let me know where you all think it would be best to go considering my acceptances in relation to my major. PS: I would like to go to a more intellectual school and parties are secondary for me.

Should I retake my sats? What can I do with a 2020?

Hello. Last November I took the sats without much preparation and I got a 1980. (720 math, 690 writing, 570 reading). I took them a second time in March which only studying critical reading since I needed to improve most in that category. I got a 2020 (780 math, 690 writing, 550 reading). The fact that i actually went down in critical reading is really disappointing and I am unsure over whether or not I should take the sats again because I studied after the first and ended up getting twenty points less than before. I have heard of Prep Scholar which claims to increase your score by 240 points (and offers a refund if you do not meet it). Do you think it is worth trying this out if I can potentially get 2260? The reason why I am worried about it is I do not know if I can pull off another 780 in math since the curve is always different.

Which one should I choose?

So, I applied to a total of 11 universities. I was accepted to 6 and denied by 5. Of the 6 that I was accepted to, I want to go to the best, but I can't decide. I applied to the business colleges. The best ones of the six with the programs are: 1. University of Richmond (Robins School of Business)- Business, Economics 2. Northeastern University (D'Amore-McKim School of Business)- Management 3. Ohio State University (Fisher College of Business)(Selected to Scholars Program)- International Business Administration 4. Penn State University (Smeal College of Business)- Management The other two are North Carolina State University and Syracuse University. Which one should I attend? I can't decide. According to Bloomberg, http://www.bloomberg.com/bschools/rankings#5 the best is Richmond, but according to Poets and Quants http://poetsandquantsforundergrads.com/2014/07/01/2014-pq-ranking-of-the-best-undergraduate-business-programs/2 , Penn State is the best. What should I do? I was also thinking about not going to any and preparing for SAT again. Also, in this time I could gain work experience and do some volunteer work, then apply to even better universities. My SAT was 1830. What do you people think is best? P.S. Money is not a problem.

UC TRANSFER HEEELLPPP AND ADVICE PLEASE

I'm a community college student in my 2nd year of college with a 3.11 overall gpa. I'm hoping to transfer this fall to UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, or Santa Clara University as a biology major. I was denied TAG because I had too many english credits due to AP tests in high school and taking an english class in college. I work as a reading and writing tutor, and I have been volunteering at a hospital for 5 years now. I belong to Phi Theta. I'm a Girl Scout. I teach younger kids how to do certain art crafts, to coach group games, and tell moral stories. I also lead the prayer songs and chants in the end. I have a pretty strong Personal statement, which my peers and professors have commented as my strong voice being present. What are my chances of getting into any of my schools? Please help me

senioritis may ruin all

My son has been accepted at a good university well suited to his abilities, talents (gifted, music skills), but due to senioritis, is talking very firmly and stubbornly about deferring his admission til the next year. He says he'll get a job at a local retail store (he's been eligible to do so for 2yrs since turning 16, but never has, so this is a BS ruse to my mind). He says he's "burned out," "not motivated," and this is his sole reason. This is unacceptable to me. Motivation is a *choice. He wont earn bupkiss doing retail, but expects to live at home (exspouse's house). I would cancel internet and cable tv, downgrade his smartphone to a granny model (no text/features, limited minutes for essential calls only)--all these are under my control. Further, exspouse agrees to no guests and paying rent of 1/2 his earnings, but will not put him out to make shift on his own. Slacking off for a year for no other reason than laziness by choice-- motivation is a choice-- will, in my understanding, screw opportunities to get loans/funding. As these are essential, this means "a year off" becomes never going to college. Be clear, this is not a year that will be utilized productively, past the (frankly not likely) chance of his even being able to secure a lowpaying retail gig. May i hear yr thoughts? I am of course especially interested in how others overcame a similar situation and saw their child situated in college on-track in the fall after HSgraduation. Discussion of the ways in which slacking off for a year are detrimental/counterproductive. And articulate discussions/counters to claims of "senioritis," "burned out," "not motivated." Thank you.

I just read that Freshman retention rate of some of top universities is as follows: Harvard 97% Stanford 98% MIT 98% http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/freshmen-least-most-likely-return Anyone with real life experiences why someone would leave these prestigious universities that are so difficult to get in? How many transfer out? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Where do I go on from here?

Okay so, most of my results from colleges ended up being waitlists (Its killing me). I have been accepted to my safety (Virginia Tech Engineering) and so I was wondering what I need to do in case NONE of the schools that waitlisted me have space for me. I still want to try out for some Ivy Leagues / Princeton / MIT / Stanford even when I go into college, as engineering is my passion. I have a lot of regrets and I don't want to repeat those mistake. I now know what I need to do in order to stand out as a candidate etc etc. But anyways, heres my main point. If I do not get accepted into any of my wait-list: 1. What should I be doing to increase my chance of being accepted as a transfer? Is the probability of me being accepted as a transfer generally higher? 2. Is it worth applying to transfer to other schools? 3. Generally, when do people apply to transfer? after 1st year? 1st semester? 2 yr? 4. Would I still need to take SATs and ACTs? :/ My plan was pretty much racking up some EC's at college (Internship, research, other activities, etc) while I attend my safety if my waitlists do not accept me. However, I have no clue from here on out. And just in case someone says "Stop worrying about the future", I would really like to continue trying in hopes of going to my dream schools (Stanford, MIT, etc) as I know I will have a lot of opportunities there. No, I am not trying to go just for prestige. Would appreciate some info, thank you!

Amherst College vs Northwestern University

Got into both schools and I feel very blessed to be given these options, but trying to decide between these two schools is so daunting... Also, I'm the first in my family to ever attend college (and one in America!), so this is a huge task! Still waiting on financial aid for both schools, but say they were about the same amount.. If you have done research about these schools or you have had to make this decision before too, what did you consider? Please give me your two cents about Northwestern and Amherst (focus more on Amherst if you can, as I will be posting this on the Northwestern board as well) in terms of the following: Location: Internship opportunities, Job opportunities, Weather, Campus safety, Surrounding area safety Academics: Strongest and weakest departments, degrees of competition or collaboration, research opportunities, faculty involvement Social: Degree of social pressure, fixed hierarchy/fluidity, general personality of school ("summed up in one word", school spirit, duck syndrome, etc.) clubs/organizations Best for what types of students: Future preparation: Job placement, name recognition Currently, I want to major in Neuroscience and then go off to dental school... but I know that many people change their minds in college, so my questions are: Based on current interests, how are the neuroscience/cognitive programs? If my interests do change, how easy is it to change majors/tracks? I would really appreciate any additional comments! Thank you all so much!

Can I Give My Twin My Spot off the Waitlist?

$

I recently got accepted to an Ivy that my twin was wait listed to. It is his dream school. If I contacted the school, might it be possible for them to give him my spot? Since this situation is so rare, and since he would definitely attend if accepted. What should I say/how should I ask this? Would this be possible/likely to work? What should he do in general to increase his chances of getting off the waitlist? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated

What to focus on summer before Senior year? (Shows vs summer program)

$

Hi all! This is going to be a lot, but bear with me. I am planning my course of action for the summer, and am beginning to realize that it's virtually impossible to do EVERYTHING in one summer! I guess the big 3 things I'm weighing right now are: - A summer intensive, because I want that taste of what a college program is like. I feel like that's a valuable experience and will show colleges I know what I'm getting myself into. I did a 4 week summer intensive last year with a local preprofessional company and it helped me tremendously! I now want to take that a step further and work with a university. I just got accepted into Wagner SMTI, but I'm also applying to AADA and Pace summer scholars. (all are 2 weeks long, so I wouldn't be gone too long. Anyone have any opinions on these programs?) -Dance classes. That's definitely my weakest area and something I know I can improve on easily if I were to focus on it more, and I could really use any help I can get going into the audition process (hard dance calls.. yikes!) -Prep material.. I plan on starting with a college audition coach this spring. (I've read a lot of good things about Mary Anna, has anyone used Tyce from SFNY? Just starting to look into my options with this). I would probably plan on checking in with them once a month ish, so they can help me pick good pieces for college auditions - then I can take them to my private teachers, work on them, then get more feedback from the coach, etc and end up with some solid rep pieces to use in auditions. - I am also planning on applying to do a workshop in my area that will produce and perform a new musical, so that will be a show to add to the resume. My only concern with all this is that it won't leave a lot of room to audition for summer shows. I have a bunch of smaller, supporting roles on my resume, and I think 3 lead roles.. How imperative is it that I get more leads? I don't want to turn them away by not having a ton of credits.. I feel like I'm always hearing about people that have 5000 professional credits and it intimidates me a lot. I go to a public school with a lot of students where it is difficult to get roles until you are an upperclassmen, so I was sort of restricted for a while. BUT, the summer programs I've been looking at would conflict with the show opportunities in my area that I've looked at - and trying to cram in a show might be too much. I still need to do college research and get ready to apply! What I usually hear is that what happens in the audition room is going to matter the most, so I usually place training over all else but I'm curious to hear your opinions. Am I on the right track with my summer plans? Should I go for the summer program? Or should I hold out to be in a show?

Could I fit in at Bates?

I am looking for a PREPPY, academically rigorous college, with a strong Political Science program. I am quite conservative, and I know Bates has a reputation for being really Liberal, but I'm fine with that as long as they respect me. Would the student body at Bates be intolerant of conservatism?

Struggling to find safeties -- advice please!

We’re really struggling to find safeties for my daughter (currently a junior) to apply to. In a (large) nutshell: GPA 3.6 UW, 4.1 W. Top 10% of a class of 500. APs: US History, Psych, Eng Lit, Eng Lang, BC Calc, Biology SAT 2000 but hopes to raise it next time So, can anyone make any suggestions please? We need: Something in the northeastern US (we’re in MA) Fewer than about 6000 undergrads She’s very introverted and would HATE a large state school, so that rules out a lot. She’d be miserable at UMass, UVM, UNH, and UConn…the usual safeties for her peers. She also would be miserable in an environment where she’s not challenged every day. She is planning on being a doctor and is very driven. Does such a college exist? We visited Clark today and she loathed it with every fiber of her being. To get an idea of her personality, so far her top choices seem to be Bard, Smith, and Bryn Mawr. She’d love Johns Hopkins, as she did an incredible internship there (her lab work may even be published before application time but we’re not holding our breaths) but she doesn’t have the stats for that to be realistic even with a great recommendation from a faculty member there. Thank you so much!
